During years of component price hikes and shortages, counterfeit risks rise in lockstep with market conditions. In 2026, silver and copper prices have surged sharply. Core materials with price increases exceeding 50% have become hotbeds for counterfeiting and remarking. For PCBA contract manufacturers, if the incoming material inspection line fails, flawless SMT and testing processes further downstream will be rendered useless.

I. What do counterfeit components look like? Three real-world categories

Counterfeit parts amid price spikes tend to flow toward the most heavily shorted components. The harder a part is to source, the higher the chance of encountering “unverified spot stock”. For the same part number, authorized channels quote a 20-week lead time, while spot suppliers offer immediate availability at roughly 20% lower cost. Such “spot goods” almost always carry risks: they may be refurbished, sanded and re-marked, or substitute parts disguised as genuine components. When supply tightens, stay anchored to traceable sourcing rather than cutting corners to meet lead times.

Counterfeit units we have intercepted during incoming inspection fall into three main types:

  • Fake NTC thermistors. Generic or low-grade NTCs are counterfeited to mimic original manufacturer parts. Though the silkscreen looks authentic, resistance curves and B-values fail to match specifications. Deployed in temperature control and power protection circuits, temperature sampling errors can directly cause protection circuit failure.
  • Counterfeit Atmel MCUs. Cloned main ICs replicate the original appearance and marking, yet internal storage capacity and programming logic deviate from genuine parts. Uploaded firmware behaves abnormally; some batches are re-marked pulled components.
  • Refurbished MOSFETs sold as new. This is common practice: recovered MOSFETs are sanded and re-marked to appear brand-new. Leads retain wear marks, parameter consistency is poor, thermal resistance rises under power, creating mass application hazards.

II. Why IQC brand verification forms the first line of defense

Counterfeit interception must happen at IQC (Incoming Quality Control), not on the production line. Our IQC team implements a four-step brand verification process for critical materials:

  1. Silkscreen verification. Compare font, character spacing and lot code format against OEM specifications. Most refurbished parts reveal defects in marking details.
  2. Packaging & trace code inspection. Original tape-and-reel, trays, labels and trace codes follow fixed OEM standards. Damaged packaging, abnormal labels or untraceable lot codes trigger immediate rejection.
  3. Electrical sampling test. Key parameters of NTCs, MOSFETs and other devices are sampled against datasheets. Units with resistance, threshold voltage, on-resistance or other values out of specification are rejected.
  4. Source validation. Cross-check procurement channels and lot pedigree to confirm materials are sourced from authorized distributors, rejecting uncertified “special-price stock”.

III. Supplier classification & upstream sourcing

Thorough inspection alone cannot beat risks at the source. We maintain a tiered supplier management system:

  • Prioritize authorized distributors. Critical components are sourced first from OEM-authorized agents and formal channels. Pricing may not be the lowest, but full traceability is guaranteed.
  • Ban refurbished supply streams. “Pulled, refurbished, surplus new” inventory is strictly excluded from our approved vendor list.
  • Dual or multi-source backup. We maintain 2–3 qualified suppliers for key components. Market volatility is mitigated through legitimate alternative sources instead of resorting to grey-market stock.

Supported by a multi-source validation framework, substitute components undergo parameter comparison, sample validation and functional testing. Mass production approval is granted only after confirming full compliance. We would rather spend two extra weeks on validation than gamble an entire production batch.

IV. Incoming material inspection checklist for procurement teams

  1. Can authorized source documentation be provided for critical components?
