Among all electronic product categories, automotive electronics are arguably the most demanding. PCBs must withstand vibration, thermal shock, humidity, and electromagnetic interference while maintaining stable operation over decades. A single cold solder joint or solder bridge may directly compromise driving safety.
For Tier1/Tier2 procurement and quality engineers, auditing a PCBA contract manufacturer essentially answers one question: Can this factory translate "automotive-grade reliability requirements" into executable, inspectable, and traceable process actions on the production line? More and more automotive electronics customers are focusing on one term — IPC Class.
IPC-A-610 is the most widely adopted standard for acceptability of electronic assemblies. It defines three process classes:
Class 3 is far more than "stricter inspection". It sets tighter acceptance limits for solder joint geometry, solder fillet height, void percentage, plated through-hole fill, and component placement offset. A solder joint acceptable under Class 2 may be rejected under Class 3.
This means every process step, from solder paste printing, component placement, reflow soldering to inspection, must be controlled within a narrower process window — defects are prevented during production rather than sorted out after assembly.
The complementary IPC-620-A standard governs acceptance criteria for cable harness assemblies and soldering. Automotive PCBA boards are typically controlled under the IPC series standards with auditable process records.
Important distinction: IPC Class refers to process and acceptance criteria, not a certification certificate. True capability lies in whether the production line consistently operates within the corresponding class process windows and maintains comprehensive inspection coverage.
