The off-grid energy storage market continues to expand, driving rising manufacturing demand for off-grid inverter control boards. This type of board features distinct industry characteristics: long component lead times, high customization, and complex BOM coordination. For hardware teams, sourcing a capable PCBA manufacturer that can fully deliver the project often proves more challenging than the board design itself.
Power components and custom parts coexist. The control board integrates power devices, custom inductors and transformers, plus parts marked with the customer’s own part codes. Its supply chain organization is far more complex than that of general consumer circuit boards.
High proportion of long-lead-time materials. Lead times from original manufacturers for inverter main controllers and power devices generally exceed 20 weeks. If procurement is triggered only after order confirmation, material delays will derail the whole project timeline.
Customer-owned part codes on BOMs. Customer drawings and BOMs adopt internal material codes. The contract manufacturer must complete full mapping between “customer part code – manufacturer part number – brand & specification”. Any mapping error may result in wrong components for the entire batch.
We implement a rolling material preparation mechanism for inverter customers. For core materials with lead times over 20 weeks, we lock orders and build inventory in advance based on customers’ rolling forecasts, shifting from “order-triggered procurement” to “forecast-driven stock preparation”. The 9006 series main controller and its supporting materials operate under this mechanism to ensure full material availability at mass production launch.
This practice aligns with our general inventory system: substantial safety stock for core materials with rolling replenishment, to hedge against long OEM lead times and price hikes, and guarantee stable delivery for large-batch orders.
In terms of manufacturing processes, inverter control boards have special requirements. Power components adopt thick copper and large-area thermal designs, with soldering profiles customized according to power device characteristics. In addition to ICT testing, full boards undergo FCT functional testing to verify core functions and interface signals. We do not design the electrical topology of inverters, yet we rigorously execute every critical manufacturing step: thermal management, soldering and testing, with zero compromise. Besides, drawing review and incoming quality inspection for custom components (inductors, transformers, structural parts) are managed separately to prevent mixing custom parts with standard materials and control component mismatch risks at the source.
When customer BOMs carry internal part codes, we enforce three tiers of checks:
This workflow was established after a lesson learned from a previous material mismatch incident. Since then, BOM verification for inverter projects has become a dedicated inspection item, blocking material matching issues at the source before they enter production.
A 3.5K-class off-grid inverter control board project (200 pcs, A-class order) was delivered under the above system. Main controllers and long-lead materials were pre-stocked; mapping and verification were completed for the customer’s coded BOM. Adapter boards, display panels and control boards were manufactured in serialized coordination, with FCT testing covering all core functions. PCB silkscreen optimization and engineering change request (CR) management requested by the customer were implemented synchronously. All changes are fully traceable, keeping production-line BOM consistent with design BOM.
When selecting a PCBA manufacturer for off-grid inverter control boards, verify four core capabilities:
The core competency for off-grid inverter control board OEM is not merely SMT assembly capability, but deep expertise in supply chain organization and BOM collaboration. The combination of material stocking mechanism, part code mapping and comprehensive testing forms the foundation for stable delivery of such projects.
