However, for automotive electronics and industrial control applications, there is a more robust protection solution: potting. The entire circuit board is encapsulated inside resin, delivering full coverage of waterproofing, shock resistance and corrosion protection, even on edges and corners.
Potting, though, is far more than simply pouring resin over the board. Poor potting can yield worse results than no protection at all — common defects include air bubbles, cracking, and crushed wiring harnesses. Conformal coating forms a thin protective film. It is repairable and suitable for most general scenarios. Potting is full encapsulation. The whole board is surrounded by resin, delivering superior protection performance, yet it is generally non-repairable.
Your selection depends on the operating environment: potting is preferred for automotive electronics and outdoor equipment subject to continuous vibration and humidity. Conformal coating is sufficient for standard consumer electronics.
One of the most frequent defects on potted assemblies is tangled wiring inside the resin. Overlapping cables block full resin infusion, creating void paths; alternatively, wires may snap under resin shrinkage stress during curing.
For a high-tier automotive electronics customer with annual consumption of tens of thousands of boards, our project specification explicitly prohibits crossed wires and mandates clear gaps between cables. This is not arbitrary preference — it is an engineering requirement. Clear gaps allow resin to flow and fill the space completely, ensuring uniform stress distribution after curing and reliable performance.
Therefore, wiring layout design matters far more for potted boards than for conformal-coated PCBA. Harness routing, bundling methods and gap dimensions must be validated and finalized during the pilot run phase.
